Counting down the hottest, most popular board games each month to help you find the best new games that people are playing, backing on Kickstarter, and talking about!
February 2019’s list of the top 10 best board games is designed to help you find the best new board games that you may not have known about!
Games discussed this month include:
Coming in at number nine this month is one of only two games making their debut on the Top 10, this one being New Frontiers by Rio Grande Games. New Frontiers is a standalone game, based on Race for the Galaxy family. In the game, players build galactic empires by acquiring distant worlds, many of which will provide special abilities to their owner. Additionally, some planets are denoted as “windfall” or “production” worlds, each with having its own unique bonus for those who colonize it.
Nemesis is a 1-5 player sci-fi survival game in which players awake from hibernation on a spaceship experiencing a critical system failure. And the day just continues to be a bit of a challenge from there. The crew must discover the cause of the system failure and fix it in order to return to Earth. But their investigation may be hindered by the distracting noises, strange noises, ALIEN noises, that nobody on board has ever heard before.
Sleeping Gods by Red Raven Games, makes it debut on the countdown this month at number 57. In Sleeping Gods, players pilot their vessel, the Manticore, through a strange, 1920’s landscape – exploring exotic islands, meeting new characters, and seeking out the totems of the gods – which will unlock the means to return home. Sleeping Gods is a campaign, storytelling game from Ryan Laukat, the same designer of Above & Below, and Near & Far.
Root is a game of adventure and war in which 2 to 4 (1 to 6 with the ‘Riverfolk’ expansion) players battle for control of a vast wilderness. The nefarious Marquise de Cat has seized the great woodland, intent on harvesting its riches. Under her rule, the many creatures of the forest have banded together. This Alliance will seek to strengthen its resources and subvert the rule of Cats. In this effort, the Alliance may enlist the help of the wandering Vagabonds who are able to move through the more dangerous woodland paths. Though some may sympathize with the Alliance’s hopes and dreams, these wanderers are old enough to remember the great birds of prey who once controlled the woods. In Root, players drive the narrative, and the differences between each role create an unparalleled level of interaction and replayability. Leder Games invites you and your family to explore the fantastic world of Root!
DinoGenics is a competitive game for two to five players, in which each player is the head of their own private, dinosaur park, island resort. Because who’s ever heard of Jurassic Peninsula? Each season, players assign agents to the mainland to compete over DNA and other limited resources. Once collected, players can build fences, various park facilities and populate their parks with dinosaurs. Parks with the most prestigious dinosaurs will attract the most visitors. But beware; if dinosaurs are neglected or improperly penned, they will attempt to escape and spread havoc through the entire park.
Taking flight from spot thirteen to land at number one this month is Wingspan by Stonemaier Games. Wingspan is a competitive, medium-weight, card-driven, engine-building board game in which players are bird watchers, ornithologists, researchers and collectors – all seeking to discover and attract the best birds to their network of wildlife preserves. Demonstrating that even in the world of tabletop games, even environmental conservation is rife with competition. The game includes 170 unique cards featuring fabulous feathered illustrations, custom dice and a tailor-made Game Trayz insert, 75 egg miniatures, a birdfeeder dice tower, and other components designed with an avian touch. Wingspan will be soaring into retailers on March 8th. In the meantime, if you wet your beak, you can try out a digital version of the game that’s available right now on the Tabletopia online platform
